I See White People

“Oh you liked Batman? Yeah, I didn’t see it, I’m really into Serbian film now. They had a great retrospective at the Vancouver Festival.”

Stuff White People Like

From the L.A. Times –

By “white people,” Lander doesn’t actually mean the more than 221 million Americans who check that box on the decennial census. But that’s part of the fun. Lander is doing to whites what scores of journalists and politicians do to non-white minorities every day, “essentializing” complex identities — that is, stripping away all variety and reducing them to their presumed authentic essences.

One irony-deficient reader complained that the blog was less about white people than it was about yuppies. And without knowing it, she was cutting to the heart of the joke. Lander is gently making fun of the many progressive, educated, upper-middle-class whites who think they are beyond ethnicity or collectively shared tastes, styles or outlook. He’s essentially reminding them that they too are part of a group.

Fun Friday Links

Some blogs you might not be subscribed too –

Your Pet’s Best Friend – A small town vet who blogs. Hat tip to Smays for the link. I’ve been subscribed to this for a while now, it’s not earth shattering stuff, but if you’re looking for yet another blog to help sooth your scientific curiosity about things, you might find YPBF fun to read from time to time.

If Charlie Parker Was a Gun Slinger – Seminal Images that’ll send you searching Google for answers.

LP Cover Lover – The title says it all.

Deep Sea News – Yet another scientific curiosity soother.

Who Killed Bambi – I can’t even begin to explain it, but it’s always interesting. (Some imagery NSFW)

Senior Pranks

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – A high school lunch period was disrupted Monday by a greased, naked student who ran around screaming and flailing his arms until police twice used a stun gun on him, authorities said.

Killian is in jail and charged with inducing panic, public indecency, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct. A message seeking comment was left at Killian’s home.

School officials reported that Killian was a good student, Gaylor said. There was no indication of substance abuse or a medical problem.

Kinda sad when you think about it – in these wonderfully modern times, student’s get tazed twice for pulling off great senior pranks.

Drew Barrymore

From drug using child star to resident Hollywood wild girl to production company CEO – Mrs. Drew Barrymore. Without a doubt, my favorite Hollywood starlet. She’s gone through many different looks and styles throughout her career, all of them amazing to see. These days she has this grown up, earthy California girl thing going on that just kills me. (Click through the images for the full experience.)

Drew also reminds me of Uma Thurman quite a bit as well as Madonna – all three are talented, intelligent and beautiful.

She’s also about to celebrate her 32nd birthday, and yep she’s single. 🙂 Happy birthday Drew!

Anna – RIP

Quite a few people – a lot of them under the age of 20, idolized Anna. I think this combined with her tragic death makes her story news worthy… especially when you consider what kids have to look up too these days. Hopfully her ‘sad tale of woe’ is getting through to those that need to hear it.

..and if you believe that, I’ve got some property to sell you. Honestly, I was just looking for a good excuse to splash her picture across my blog. 🙂 Sound familiar?

Five Cents Worth

There’s a great little article over on The New York Times detailing a solution to a little known problem – the American penny is worth a heck of a lot more than 1 cent. This disparity cost the American taxpayer 40 million last year. I’d post the conclusion but that would spoil it. The skinny – hold onto all those Honest Abe’s, they might be going up in value someday soon.

Extreme Moto Modding

I’ve been doing some research for work related to cell phone interfacing. In the process I’ve come across an amazing group of Motorola phone fanatics. ‘Extreme moto modding’ involves hacking the firmware and settings of your Motorola phone in order to modify the default functionality and look and feel of the operating system. It reminds me a lot of what kids used to do to their cars in high school, only these kids are deep into the technology and low level programming of their phones. Some good examples include altering buttons on the RAZR so each one plays a different MP3 and adding slick animations and sounds to the interfaces. They also have a hip lingo that shows up in their forum posts. Pretty interesting stuff. Dig into the forums on MotoModders.net for a peak into thier world.

One additional worthy mention – one guy known as “s5vi” wrote a Windows desktop application for interfacing to the USB interface in Motorola’s interface software. He wrote the whole application in inline assembly. I guess it’s the only language he knew. That’s about as crazy as it is cool. 🙂
