For those of you out there who might be shopping for one of those new Dell 30” 3007WFP or Apple Cinema displays, I’d suggest shopping for video cards very carefully. The terminology online stores use in describing video card features can be very misleading, especially as it relates to the type of DVI connection the cards support. Here’s a little cheat sheet I put together after doing some reading on the subject.
DVI-A : Single DVI link supporting only analog signals.
DVI-I : Single DVI link supporting analog and digital signals
DVI-D : Single DVI link supporting only digital signals
Dual Link DVI-I : Two independent DVI-I links transmitted over a single cable *
Dual Link DVI-D : Two independent DVI-D links transmitted over a single cable *
Dual DVI-I / Dual DVI : Common video card configuration – Two individual DVI-I output ports
* Works with Dell and Apple displays
