0×80041321 exception when setting auto rss feed syncronization

Saturday, June 25th, 2011

Ever get an exception when enabling feed synchronization from the feed api?

IFeedsManager fs = new FeedsManagerClass();
fs.BackgroundSync(FEEDS_BACKGROUNDSYNC_ACTION.FBSA_ENABLE);

Exception: Task image is corrupt or has been tampered with. (hresult:0×80041321)

I’m not entirely sure what causes this, but basically the background task schedule job has become corrupt. The simple fix:

1) open an elevated command prompt
2) type
>msfeedssync disable
>msfeedssync enable

Which deletes the old task and then recreates it.

RevoCenter from Acer

Friday, June 24th, 2011

Promising. Specs:

4 hot swapable eSATA drive bays
1T disk included
2 GB RAM
64-bit D410 Intel Atom CPU
Gigabit ethernet +5 USB
Windows Home Server 2011

Open questions: What are the dimensions? (It looks to be about ten inches on each side, which would be perfect.) Also, what is the power consumption while idle? If you have a home server with shared folders for things like music and media, the server is awake but idle anytime a computer in your house is active. Therefore power consumption is really important. Home Server 2011 has some really good power consumption settings you can tweak which should help, but the base level consumption has to be low.

Updated – a basic Specification Sheet

Roling out in Japan by the end of October. No word yet on U.S. release dates.

Cryptobiosis

Thursday, June 23rd, 2011

Cryptobiosis is an ametabolic state of life entered by an organism in response to adverse environmental conditions such as desiccation, freezing, and oxygen deficiency. In the cryptobiotic state, all metabolic procedures stop, preventing reproduction, development, and repair. An organism in a cryptobiotic state can essentially live indefinitely until environmental conditions return to being hospitable. When this occurs, the organism will return to its metabolic state of life as it was prior to the cryptobiosis.

Related to a Popular Science article: Why Sex With Creatures from the Future Is a Bad Idea

I wonder what society would be like today if homo sapiens were capable of entering a cryptobiotic state. I think it would make a great basis for a science fiction book. Maybe someone has already written something along these lines?

Psychedelics

Thursday, June 23rd, 2011

One subject reported: “I feel that I relate better in my marriage. There is more empathy—a greater understanding of people and understanding their difficulties and less judgment. Less judging of myself, too.” Another said: “I have better interaction with close friends and family and with acquaintances and strangers….My alcohol use has diminished dramatically.” Fourteen months after the experiment, 94 percent of the subjects called their psilocybin session one of five most meaningful experiences they’d ever had.

Facebook recs on Bing

Tuesday, June 14th, 2011

When this was originally announced, I figured it’d be kind of worthless. It hasn’t been. Also interesting is that the Economist article doesn’t show up in the first page of results in a similar Google search.

(BTW, thanks Steve!)

The Retired Life of an Evil Genius

Sunday, June 12th, 2011

Hosted by David Cameron, the event marks the culmination of a drive, spearheaded by Gates, to raise $3.7 billion to vaccinate 243 million children in the world’s poorest countries against illnesses such as pneumonia and measles. Gates and Cameron are expected to announce the money has been successfully raised and, it’s hoped, will save four million lives over the next four years.

Gates decided vaccinating the world’s disadvantaged is a cost-effective, simple way to help the very poor.

‘You get more bang for your buck.’

Why not be the guy who cures cancer instead?

‘The motto of the foundation is that every life has equal value. There are more people dying of malaria than any specific cancer. When you die of malaria aged three it’s different from being in your seventies, when you might die of a heart attack or you might die of cancer. And the world is putting massive amounts into cancer, so my wealth would have had a meaningless impact on that.’

China’s growing fleet of cars

Sunday, June 12th, 2011

“I think the strains on the global oil delivery system due to China trying to put in place a whole new US sized vehicle fleet in the space of the decade 2010-2020 are likely to be very profound, and I expect it to cause serious disruptions in the global economy.”
